Well, I tried the suggested method - using a the square end of a socket extension - to no avail. All my socket extensions are too big! So, off to the toolshop tomorrow to buy the giant allen key. Any idea what size? Oh, hang on, I'll just go out and measure it....
I now have the same problem with the bolt Have a replacement mirror unit but need to remove the old one. Cannot find the bolt with a head that fitted - used last time with a mole wrench Did you find a suitable Allen key? If what and from where? osg

An easy way to make a tool to remove the mirror bolt is by using a long M8 bolt and 2 nuts. Run the 2 nuts along the end of the bolt, then lock them against one another very tightly using 2, 13mm spanners. Then wrap the 13mm head of the bolt with a few turns of pvc tape until it fits tightly in the 14mm female allen head. You can then easily crack the bolt loose and tighten it up again using just a 13mm spanner.
The proper tool is a 14mm allen key, available here:
Thanks for the multiple solutions for removing and re-fitting the bolt. Did try an M8 bolt head and found it too small so wrapping tape makes sense Pleased that you have confirmed the size as 14mm Will buy 14mm Allen key or 14mm Hex socket Cheers, osg

14mm Allen key arrived, so replacement mirror fitted easily. No such tool could be found at B&Q, Screwfix nor Toolstation (staff very dim and unhelpful) osg
